Gone with the wind





The title was taken from the first line of a poem written by Ernest Dowson and also from a phrase Scarlett uses in the book. Gone with the wind won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937 and the Academy Award in 1939.


Gone with the wind, published on June 30, 1936 are a romantic novel and the only novel written by Margaret Mitchell. The story is set in Jonesboro and Atlanta, Georgia during the American Civil War, follows the life of Scarlett O’Hara, the daughter of an Irish Immigrant.
Scarlett marries 2 men she does not love; she is in love with Ashley Wilkes, who has married another.
The novel is one of the most popular books of all time, selling more than 30 million copies.

Scarlett is the town belle. She won the heart of many men with her personality and beauty. She gets married with the bashful Charles Hamilton just to make Ashley Wilkes envious. But then the civil war starts and all men who can fight, included Charles and Ashley go to war, Charles die and leave Scarlett with one kid.

Scarlett moves to Atlanta and stay with her sister in law. Rhett Butler is a complete scoundrel and has millions in cash. Scarlett takes scoundrel and has millions in cash. Scarlett takes advantage of this. Ashley returns form war and stay for Christmas. Then Scarlett´s mother die.

Scarlett hears that Tara is in modern-day foreclosure decides to go to Atlanta and charm Rhett into paying the bill, but this time the civil war has ended and Ashley was living at Tara. Then Scarlett marries with Frank Kennedy and together they make the money to pay the foreclosure. Scarlett travels home in a night but she gets attacked. Then Frank, Ashley, Rhett and many other men in the Ku Klux Klan go to gain revenge. In the attack Frank is killed leaving Scarlett with another child, then Rhett confesses his love to her and they get married.

Scarlett and Rhett enjoy life together; they live happily until Scarlett´s undying love for Ashley takes over, Scarlett and Rhett sleep in separate bedrooms and they act like strangers. Then they have a child name Bonnie, a few years later, Bonnie is killed and Scarlett blames Rhett. He slips into oblivion and decide to leave Scarlett after the death of Melanie Wilkes. Scarlett realizes that she never love Ashley and try to get Rhett back.

• Sullen O'Hara: Scarlett's selfish sister.
• Careen O'Hara: Scarlett's timid, religious sister who, in the end of the story, joins a convent.
• Ellen O'Hara: Scarlett's gracious mother, of French ancestry.

The book includes a vivid description of the fall of Atlanta in 1864 and the devastation of the war the novel showed considerable historical research. Mitchell herself was ten years old before she learned that the south has lost the war. Northern soldiers try to stop the attacks, and Rhett helps Ashley who is shot, to get help through his friend belle.
Rhett is also mentioned to be a no great lover of the Klan.

There are 3 families, main character is scarlet. She married 3 times, and has 3 children, each one with different husband. Ashley, father of her son to sister of first husband, he claims to be attracted to scarlet. Ashley´s sister hate Scarlett, because she married to her lover.
Her 2nd husband, Frank Kennedy, an older man, who will do anything to appease Scarlett. Their daughter is ugly and Frank who was equiniphobia, unlike her half sister and grandfather. Archie disliking for all woman.

The own life experience of Margaret Mitchell’s have parallels and provide some inspiration for the story of gone with the wind. And her characters were not based on real people. Only have similarities with people Mitchell’s were meet in her life. Her physical brutality and low regard that Rhett butler describes was based on her husband red Upshaw when she knew he was a bootlegger she divorced him.
Mitchell inspired by sir Godfrey Barnsley Martha Roosevelt inspired by Scarlett O’Hara and her biographer David McCullough discovered Mitchell’s as reporter and make an interview with Martha’s brides maid and she describe Martha similarity with Scarlett.

Its a beautiful movie about an impossible love. I liked the movie because all the things that happened are real and are things that can happened not only in a movie.I want to see it again but not like a project. Its a very nice movie and the story too and I really recomand the movie to all the people...
